Mary Cunningham celebrates 104 years

Mary Cunningham celebrated her 104th birthday on Thursday, March 8, 2018, at Covenant Place with her family, friends and staff.

Born in Greenville, Mary is the fourth and only living of six girls. She is the widow of the Rev. Dr. Francis Cunningham, who was the minister at Trinity United Methodist Church from 1949 to 1954. Their marriage blessed them with four daughters: Harriett Plowden of Pawleys Island, Mary Francis Thomas (T.) of Rock Hill, Betty Hornsby (Ben) of Atlanta, and a daughter who died at age 22.

In addition to her loving family, Mary is adored at Covenant Place by all. She is a charter resident who returned to Sumter in 1994 from Lake Junaluska, North Carolina. She still resides in the same independent apartment home and doesn't take any prescription medications. As a minister's wife, she has lived in many places and been involved in numerous ministries. She has traveled to 26 countries and loves gardening.

Mary says that the secret to her longevity is "good, clean living" and "If it's good, do it. If not, don't."
