BURLINGTON, N.C. - Loyd Russell McElveen, 86, husband of Mildred Munn McElveen, died on Wednesday, May 2, 2018, at Alamance Hospice Home in Burlington, surrounded by his family.

Born on Dec. 10, 1931, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Wesley L. and Edna Osteen McElveen. He was a 1960 graduate of The Citadel and a member of the last veteran class. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran. Russell was a longtime faithful member of Grove Park Baptist Church in Burlington. He retired after a 35-year career from Western Electric/AT&T/Lucent.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years; children, Janice McElveen Holmes (Ken) of Harrisburg, North Carolina, Loyd McElveen Jr. (Denise) of Sanford, North Carolina, Sharon McElveen of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and Amy McElveen of Greensboro, North Carolina; loving grandsons, granddaughters and great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Gobe McElveen (Pat) and Emery McElveen (Nancy), both of Sumter.

He was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Kathy; and three brothers, James McElveen, Phil McElveen and Robert McElveen.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday at the Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Dr. Steve Williams officiating. Burial will be at Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery.

A celebration of life service will be held in Burlington at a later date.

Pallbearers will be Kris Holmes, Wesley McElveen, Landon, Carter, Joshua Howes, Chris Buchanan and Bruce Bradham.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. on Sunday at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice & Palliative Care of Alamance-Caswell, 914 Chapel Hill Road, Burlington, NC 27215.
