John Walter Spann, 74, affectionately known as "Chick," departed this earthly life on Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2018, at Palmetto Health Heart Hospital, Columbia.

John was born on June 19, 1944, in Sumter County, a son of the late Eugene Spann Sr. and Kathryn Joyner Spann. He attended the public schools of Sumter County and was a graduate of Lincoln High School Class of 1964. On May 8, 1993, he was united in marriage to Dieanne Sanders Spann. John worked for Campbell Soup Inc. from 1964 to 1989, until it became Gold Kist Inc., where he retired in 1995. During that time, he was also a small business owner of John's Market for 30 years, until he fully retired in October 2017.

He is survived by his wife, Dieanne S. Spann; four daughters, Jennifer (Wayne) Hemingway of Sumter, Christal Spann of Charlotte, North Carolina, Johnetta Spann-Knuckles of Columbia and Bridget Spann of Sumter; six grandchildren; two brothers, Eugene (Femina) Spann Jr. and Michael (Nichole) Spann; two sisters, Vivian Spann Moore and Maggie Spann Kelley; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

The family is receiving relatives and friends at the home, 1475 Florence Highway, Sumter.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday at John Wesley Williams Sr. Memorial Chapel, Williams Funeral Home Inc., 821 N. Main St., Sumter, with Minister Jake Sanders III officiating, eulogist.

The funeral processional will leave at 1:20 p.m. from the home.
