Funeral services for Janie Williams Washington will be held at noon on Saturday at Emmanuel United Methodist Church, 421 S. Main St., Sumter, with the Rev. Marvis L. Stewart, pastor, and the Rev. Dr. Thomas J. Bowman Sr., as eulogist. Interment will follow at Hillside Memorial Park cemetery.

The public may view from 3 to 7 p.m. today at Palmer Memorial Chapel, 304 S. Main St., Sumter.

The Alpha Pi Chi Inc. service will be held from 6 until 7 p.m.

Janie Williams Washington transitioned on Sunday, July 8, 2018, at her residence in Sumter.

Born in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late James and Corine Felder Williams. Janie received her early education at Stone Hill Elementary School and graduated in 1941 from Lincoln High School, Sumter. In 1946, she earned her Bachelor of Science degree from South Carolina State University, Orangeburg, and her master's degree from Hampton Institute, Hampton, Virginia. Mrs. Washington began her teaching career at Orangeburg County Training School, Orangeburg, and later moved to Sumter County. She taught at Mayesville Institute, Mayesville, Ebenezer High School and Hillcrest High School, Dalzell. She served Sumter School District 2 for 40 years as well as many other organizations. Mrs. Washington was indeed an embodiment of the motto "Lifting as We Climb." Mrs. Janie was a devoted and lifelong member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church, where she served on the administrative board, council one ministries, trustee board, finance committee, pastor parish relations, United Methodist Women, and as the Sunday school teacher for the three and four year olds. She was a member of the finance committee, United Methodist Women, stewardship committee and advisor to the soup kitchen.

Mrs. Washington was a member of the Alpha Epsilon Chapter of Alpha Pi Chi Sorority Inc., Sumter, and served as president for 23 years.

Mrs. Washington leaves to cherish precious memories: her loving and devoted daughter-in-law, Lynette Dillon Washington of Columbia; her only grandson, Jason Lundees (Freeda) Washington of Columbia; five great-grandchildren, Jayla, Jaquaris, Paris, Sydney and Khloe of Columbia; her loving and devoted adopted daughter, Ethel Grant Jones of Ruston, Louisiana; and a host of other relatives and friends.
