Stephanie Wells James of Sumter and Phillip David Gould of Greenville were united in marriage at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, June 17, 2017, at Trinity United Methodist Church in Sumter.

The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Evans James III of Sumter, and the granddaughter of Mr. Joe John Stephenson and the late Alita Tomlinson Stephenson of Winnsboro, Ren James and the late Mr. George Coggin James of Sumter. She graduated from Clemson University with a Bachelor of Science in Food Science and from the Medical University of South Carolina with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. She is a registered nurse employed by MUSC.

The bridegroom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jeffrey David Gould of Greenville, and the grandson of Mr. Youel Hilsman and the late Salley Riley Hilsman of Spartanburg and the late Mr. and Mrs. Harry Hershey Gould of Chicago, Illinois. He graduated from Clemson University with a Bachelor of Science in Bioengineering and from MUSC College of Dental Medicine with a Doctorate of Dental Medicine. He is employed by Carolina Dental Alliance in Greenville.

The Rev. Angela Halter Marshall officiated.

Music was provided by Clara Temple Williams, organist; Kelly Murphy Jokisch, trumpeter; and Mr. Stephenson, grandfather of the bride, soloist.

Escorted by her father, the bride wore a soft V-neck, custom-made gown of Italian crepe featuring alencon lace cap sleeves, a see-through lace back with a beaded waistband, a chapel train and a blue silk garter made and worn by her great-grandmother holding an 1872 sixpence. She carried a hand-tied bouquet filled with garden roses, spray roses, ranunculus, lisianthus and astible with garden greens.

Lauren Renee Bordeaux served as maid of honor. Bridesmaids were Lisa Joy Crabbe; Caroline Turner Cromer; Anna Lusk DuRant; Salley Virginia Gould, sister of the bridegroom; Elizabeth Alston James; Kristen Batey Self; Katherine Lewis Smith; Keaton Virginia Stroud; and Francis Marie Taylor.

John Hilsman Gould, brother of the bridegroom, served as best man. Groomsmen were Mr. William Taylor Brantley; Mr. Robert Semmes Gilmore III; Mr. Edward Buck Hagood; Mr. Frank Prentiss Hammond III; Mr. James Durham Hill; Mr. John Evans James IV, brother of the bride; Mr. Peter Joseph Palazola; Mr. James Chapman Scott; Mr. Mark Joel Seals Jr.; and Mr. Jeffrey Larry Zimmerman.

Also participating were Mr. James Stuart Mack as crucifer, Caroline Bowman Freeman as reader and Catherine Davis James and Margaret Tanner Miler as greeters.

The bride's parents held the reception at Sunset Country Club.

The bridegroom's parents held the rehearsal party at La Piazza at Hamptons.

Following a wedding trip to Jamaica, the couple will reside in Greenville.
