James C. "Jim" Comer Sr., age 86, beloved husband of 35 years to Janice Anderson Comer, departed this life on Saturday, Dec. 15, 2018, at his home after a long illness.

Born in Charleston, West Virginia, he was a son of the late William Comer and Mabel Morton Harrold. Jim served in the United States Air Force and the Air Force Reserve for more than 30 years. After his retirement, he worked in non-destructive testing in Civil Service at Shaw Air Force Base, where he also retired. Jim was a lifetime member of Hillcrest Masonic Lodge and a member of EAA Chapter 1456 Sumter Airport. He loved to fly and was an instrument-rated private pilot for more than 30 years. Jim owned several Cessna airplanes and built a RV7-A plane. He loved music and took both guitar and mandolin lessons. He was a faithful member of Hickory Road Baptist Church. Most of all, Jim loved spending time with his family. He will be remembered as a very loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

In addition to his loving wife, he is survived by two sons, James "Jimmy" Comer Jr. and W. Scott Comer and his wife, Kathy, both of Sumter; three daughters, Cynthia Mindermann and her husband, Patrick, of Pierce, South Dakota, Tracy Spring of Sumter and Tina Barkley of Sumter; one sister, Wanda Williams of New Martinsville, West Virginia; eight grandchildren, Rena Anderson, Ronald Anderson, Maryleigh Roark, Jay Comer, Bridget Barkley, Brianna Barkley, Brittani Evans and Addisyn Farmer; and 12 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a stepmother, two sisters and two brothers-in-law.

A funeral service will be held at noon on Wednesday at Hickory Road Baptist Church with the Rev. Ron Taylor officiating. Interment with full military honors will follow at 2 p.m. at Florence National Cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Wednesday from 11 a.m. to noon at Hickory Road Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hickory Road Baptist Church, 1245 Cherryvale Drive, Sumter, SC 29154.

The family would like to thank Caris Hospice, especially Linda, Penny and Grace, for their care and compassion. They would also like to thank Renette Wongrey, his sitter, for all her help in allowing Jim to remain home during his illness.
