After a few soft openings that included serving to police officers and firefighters, the fine dining restaurant in downtown Sumter officially opened Thursday night after moving to 33 N. Main St. from around the corner on Hampton Ave., and owner Danielle Thompson said she saw "a bunch of happy guests."
"The building itself is just amazing," she said of the restored, now new yellow facade next to the Sumter Opera House. The building had to be restored, renovated and outfitted for a restaurant, which will soon share a kitchen with next-door's La Piazza, which Thompson also runs and that is already holding some private events.
The menu downstairs is the same as the old Hamptons, Thompson said.
A change to the layout includes the dining room being separate from both the kitchen and the bar. The kitchen is closed to the eyes of diners, and Rafters upstairs serves as a cocktail and appetizers bar.
Rafters features a floor-to-ceiling glass wine cellar and a private dining room facing and looking down on Main Street that can fit up to 14 people, Thompson said.
There is also a large rooftop that is accessible through Rafters.
"We wanted to make sure it's everything people in Sumter want it to be but also the thing people drive from out of town to eat with us, like a destination location," Thompson said. "It will be an integral role in keeping the [Hyatt] hotel where rooms are booked."
Once the hotel opens - it is still on track for a mid-April opening - La Piazza will officially open, Thompson said.
Work continuing on that outdoor venue, which can hold up to 400 people with a stage for a band, recently included completing a green wall behind the 60-foot bar.
Currently, Hamptons is open for lunch and dinner Wednesday through Friday, for dinner on Saturday and for brunch on Sunday. Thompson said the goal is to open for lunch and dinner on Tuesday, too, once the hotel opens.
