LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Free press is necessary for democracy to thrive

Posted

Anyone who says the press is the enemy is the enemy.

The press is as much a part of our Constitution as the president and legislative branch of our country. The press is not your friend or your enemy. The press is to seek the truth whatever it is.

The Sumter Item is one of the best examples I know. If they make a mistake, they correct it. I have read the Item for sixty years. The Osteen family - Hubert Osteen Sr., Hubert Osteen Jr. and now the sons - have stood for that charge.

When the Item reported on the Tuomey Hospital facts, they were ridiculed. I said at that time it was my opinion that the Board of Tuomey Hospital was like the mafia. I am glad we now have a hospital. We must have a free press and anyone who says otherwise does not know or care about the Constitution.

Thanks to The Sumter Item and all others whose main charge is to seek the truth. This country cannot survive without that.

JOHN E. MILES SR.
