First Gamecock Bowl set for Saturday at Patriot Park

The 1st Gamecock Bowl youth football event sponsored by Sumter Country Recreation & Parks will be held on Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. at Patriot Park SportPlex.

The event will feature the two 11-12 year-old Sumter rec department tackle football teams. The Sumter Eagles will meet Hartsville I at 9 a.m., while the Sumter Outlaws will take on Hartsville II at noon.

There will be a contest between those two games with Lamar taking on Bishopville at 10:30.

Admission is free.

B TEAM FOOTBALL

Wilson Hall 38

Heathwood Hall 8

COLUMBIA - Wilson Hall improved to 4-2 with a 38-8 victory over Heathwood Hall on Wednesday at the Heathwood field.

Blake VanPatten scored two touchdowns for the Barons on runs of 16 and 47 yards, respectively. Clark Kinney had a 62-yard TD run and connected with VanPatten for a 2-point conversion. Miles VanPatten had a 75-yard scoring run and Kaleb Karlsberg and Thomas Creech each scored on a 2-point conversion.

Defensively, Dylan Richardson returned an interception 40 yards for a touchdown. Walker Smith and Hayden Mims led in tackles with four apiece.

JUNIOR VARSITY FOOTBALL

Sumter 34

Blythewood 0

BLYTHEWOOD - Miles Capers scored three touchdowns to lead Sumter High School to a 34-0 victory over Blythewood on Tuesday at the BHS field.

Nyquan Thames scored a touchdown and Shamar Dowd had a defensive touchdown.

MIDDLE SCHOOL FOOTBALL

Chestnut Oaks 12

Hillcrest 0

DALZELL - Chestnut Oaks finished its season with a 2-4 record with a 12-0 triumph over Hillcrest on Tuesday at Donald L. Crolley Memorial Stadium.

The Falcons scored on a 5-yard pass from Trenton Rouse to Monteque Rheames II and a 25-yard run by Kenyard Bolden.

Zyierre Smalls had an interception on defense. The coaching staff pointed out the play of Marion Moses, Jhamylin Cobbins, Trevon Stewart and Jamario Green in helping post the shutout.

VOLLEYBALL

Thomas Sumter 3

Williamsburg 1

DALZELL - Thomas Sumter Academy defeated Williamsburg 3-1 on Tuesday on Senior Night at Edens Gymnasium.

The Lady Generals won by the scores of 25-20, 25-14, 19-25, 25-8.

Senior Sam Monahan had five kills and three blocks, and senior Sydney Daniel set 16 assists and had 10 kills to lead TSA.

In the junior varsity match, Williamsburg defeated Thomas Sumter 25-15, 25-12.

Spring Valley 3

Sumter 0

Sumter High School fell to 1-5 in Region IV-5A with a 3-0 loss to Spring Valley on Tuesday at the SHS gymnasium.

Spring Valley won by the scores of 25-14, 25-20, 25-15.

The Lady Gamecocks are 15-18-2 overall.

VARSITY GIRLS TENNIS

Sumter High School lost to Spring Valley 6-0 on Tuesday at the SHS courts.

2 - Kate McMillan (SV) defeated Jordan Shuping 6-1, 6-1.

3 - Chyna Thompson (SV) defeated Burgess Dubose 6-1, 6-2.

4 - Allie Wierzbowski (SV) defeated Windsor Pittman 6-1, 6-1.

5 - Taylor Williams (SV) defeated Carmen Carrigan 6-1, 6-0.
