The baseball teams from the University of South Carolina Sumter and Florence-Darlington Technical College settled little if anything in their 4-game series over the weekend at Francis Marion University's Sparrow Stadium in Florence.
The teams split both of the doubleheaders, the Stingers winning the opening game on Saturday 8-1 before USC Sumter won the second test 7-2. On Sunday, the Fire Ants won the opening contest 3-2 in nine innings before losing the nightcap 5-3.
The Fire Ants own a 1-game lead for first place in NJCAA Region X. USC Sumter has played one more series, but FDTC is one game up in the loss column. The Fire Ants are 9-3 in region play and 23-11 overall. Flo-Dar is 24-10 and 6-2.
In Saturday's opener, the Stingers knocked around USCS ace Blake Robinson. He fell to 5-2 on the season, giving up 10 hits and five earned runs while pitching a complete game.
Weston Rogers limited Sumter to seven hits, all singles, and an unearned run. He struck out nine and walked none. Tyler Mangum had two hits and scored the run on an RBI single by Austin Price. Austin Morris also had two hits.
In the second game on Saturday, Blake Robinson's brother, Lindsey, picked up the win for the Fire Ants. Lindsey evened his record at 3-3, striking out eight while walking four and allowing hits in five innings. Tristen Campbell pitched two scoreless innings for his second save.
Morris had three of Sumter's eight hits, scoring twice and driving in a run. Price and Mangum both had a double and two RBI and Donta Green had a double and a run.
In Sunday's opener, the Fire Ants scored a run in the top of the ninth and Campbell made it stand up in the bottom of the inning for the 3-2 win.
Vince Hanna reached on an error and scored on a dropped popup in short right field by the FDTC second baseman that was hit by Green.
Green had four of the Fire Ants' eight hits, including a solo home run. Eric McGirt and Price each had two hits, including a double apiece.
Campbell pitched six innings of relief, allowing four hits and one run. He struck out four and walked none.
In the final game, McGirt hit the first pitch of the game for a homer, but USCS couldn't make it stand up for a win.
McGirt finished with two hits as did Morris and Neil Taylor. Green had a double.
Hayden Franklin took the loss, giving up a run in two-thirds of an inning.
Former Sumter High School player Tradd James pitched a scoreless seventh for the Stingers to get the save.
