Pet Adoption Deals Saturday at shelter

MANNING - South Carolina's first statewide adoption event will be held today and Saturday at A Second Chance Animal Shelter, 5079 Alex Harvin Highway.

Walk for Brain Health will be on Saturday

MANNING - Clarendon Pilot Club is hosting the Walk for Brain Health beginning at 9:30 a.m. Saturday. Registration opens at 9 a.m. The donation to participate in the walk is $10 with all proceeds remaining in Clarendon County to assist the Pilot Club with various projects.

The walk will be held on the track at Manning High School's Ramsey Stadium, 2155 Paxville Highway. The Pilot Club will also be awarding lots of great door prizes.

Summerton health fair offered on Saturday

SUMMERTON - Clarendon School District One and the Lake Marion Artisans will host a health fair from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday in the gymnasium of Clarendon One Resource Center, 1154 Fourth St.

Free screenings for diabetes, high blood pressure, body mass index and cholesterol will be offered.

Walmart will offer free vision testing, and Sumter Hearing Associates will offer free hearing tests. CVS will be giving free flu shots for all Medicare participants with a nominal fee for others. Other health and wellness organizations will also be present.

Fall with Friends Trunk or Treat on Oct. 13

TURBEVILLE - Fall with Friends will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, on Turbeville Town Square. The Trunk or Treat event will feature a costume contest, bake sale, games and Todd's Twisted Balloons. More "special treats" are in the works. Don't miss this afternoon of fun in Turbeville.

DuckFest will start Saturday with tourneys

SUMMERTON - The Duck Capital of South Carolina, Summerton, will host DuckFest on Saturday and Oct. 13. On Saturday, the festival will feature the DuckFest Fall Open Bass Tournament and The Duck Cup Sporting Clays Tournament. On Oct. 13, a 5K Color Run and Fun Duck Run will be held along with a Meat Calling Contest, a cook-off, a concert and lots more. A cornhole tournament will also be held on Oct. 13 at 1 p.m. in the Town Hall parking lot. The entry fee is $40 per two-person team. The fee will be $50 per two-member team on the day of the event. Clarendon 2 welcomes program referrals

MANNING - Clarendon School District Two is beginning the process of screening students for placement in its Gifted and Talented Academic PRIDE Program. This school district conducts census testing of all second-graders each fall on the CogAT (aptitude test) and ITBS (achievement test) as part of an effort to identify students for the program, which begins in the third grade.

Students in grades three through eight who are new to the district or who have not been identified through census testing may be referred for screening by administrators, teachers, guidance counselors, parents, peers or themselves.

Deadline for referrals is Oct. 12, and referral forms are available at Manning Primary School, Manning Elementary School and Manning Junior High School in the guidance office.

MANNING - The Master's Place Ministries is presenting the 2018 Real Talk Women's Conference at 9 a.m. Oct. 13 at F.E. DuBose Career Center, 3351 Sumter Highway. The event host will be Pastor Rosa W. Plan now for The Art of Fly Fishing Workshop

SUMMERTON - A two-day fly fishing workshop will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 12 and 13 at Taw Caw Park, 7212 Wash Davis Road. The event, which is sponsored by the Town of Summerton-4 Main, Simpson ACE Hardware and Sports, Ray's Tractors, Clarendon Auto Parts and Dixie Auto Parts, will be run by the Carolina Fly Fishing Club. Inaugural Teacher's Ball proceeds go to supplies

MANNING - The 1865 Reading Academy is presenting the Inaugural Teacher's Ball at 7 p.m. on Oct. 20 at The Matrix Center, 4648 Kingstree Highway. Advance tickets for the ball are $50 per couple and $30 for individual tickets. Proceeds from the ball will go toward school supplies for teachers and the academy. Paw Howl-O-Ween 5K & Family Fun Run Fundraiser

SUMMERTON - For the Love of a Paw, a non-profit animal rescue organization in Elloree, has partnered with Santee Hardware and Santee Cooper Resort & Country Club to host a new 5K race and kids' run to race funds and awareness of the need to manage the domestic animal population in Orangeburg and Calhoun counties. eWaste Recycling on Oct. 27

MANNING - Is your electronic waste piling up? Clarendon County is offering its eWaste Recycling Program from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 27 in the Administration Building parking lot, 411 Sunset Drive. "Shred-with-Us" will also be on side to shred your documents free of charge. No plastic or newspaper for shredding. The program is accepting TVs with screens intact only, monitors, video display devices, intact computers, CPUs, keyboards, mice, printers, CD/DVD players, game consoles, small handheld electronics, cellphones, stereo tuners, radios, speakers, microwaves and vacuum cleaners.
