Church Women United of the Greater Sumter Area will recognize two women from different churches at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, May 3, at CWU's May Friendship Day Celebration. The event will be held at Union Station AME Church, 945 S. Main St.

CWU's Award Committee consisting of Willie Mae Martin, Frances Brunson, Lucille Davis, Glenda Denny and chair Ollie James submitted applications to CWU's National Office, and the following awards will be presented: Valiant Woman Award - Dora M. Washington of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church; and Key Woman Award - Ophelia Davis of Mechanicsville United Methodist Church.

The Valiant Woman award is designated for a woman in the church who has given service to CWU, her church and her community. She is a woman who lives the Gospel message in her everyday life and is always someone who leads by example.

The Key Woman award is given to a woman in the church that many parishioners know, and she knows many of them; agrees to act as a liaison for CWU events; promotes CWU activities in her church and maintains contact with local CWU board and/or officers in order to achieve the mission of CWU in the local community.

The theme for this year's May Friendship Day is "Reaching for Wholeness in Gratitude for God's Presence," focusing on our gratitude for God's presence in all things, especially as we respond to human needs. Childhood hunger is one of the most important needs of the time; special emphasis should be made in this direction, locally.
