Chase Bryant to perform at Shaw Freedom Bash on June 29

Nothing says the 4th of July like a fireworks show at a military base.

Shaw Air Force Base will be hosting its second Shaw Freedom Bash on Saturday, June 29, on base from 4 p.m. to roughly 10:15 p.m.

The event is free, with the exception of purchasing food, drinks and rides for kids, but only to people who have a Department of Defense identification number, military identification or are a sponsored guest. It is not open to the general public.

"The gates open at 4 p.m., and we'll parachute in the flag at 5 p.m.," 20th Force Support Squadron Marketing Director Derrick Rhems said. "Leslie Tom will perform the national anthem at 5 p.m."

Tom, a country music artist, will also have a live stage performance at 7 p.m. for roughly 90 minutes.

"She does a lot of old school country," Rhems said. "She's performed across different branches. Her grandfather was in (Gen. George) Patton's army in World War II."

"She used to work with a company that dealt with food safety and was a military liaison," Shaw Freedom Bash project Officer Jack Lonergan said. "Her song 'Didn't Think Twice' is in honor of her grandfather."

Chase Bryant will perform after Tom.

"He's super excited to be giving back and providing entertainment for the military and their families," Rhems said.

Along with amusement rides and bounce houses, there will be a fireworks show beginning at 10 p.m. and ending around 10:15 p.m.

"This iteration is the second year (of this event)," Rhems said. "This year, the Air Force provided the entertainment. We want to continue the celebration of the Independence holiday."

Rhems said SAFB is thankful for all its event sponsors.

"The community supports us to make this possible," Rhems said.
