Catherine McBride, 87, of 47 Murphy St., entered eternal rest on Saturday, Dec. 1, 2018, at Palmetto Healthy Tuomey.

She was officially born on March 2, 1931, but her recorded birth date is March 24, 1931. Catherine was born to the late Marie McBride-Baldwin and Hazel Nathaniel. She was reared in the home of her uncle and aunt, the late Eddie and Lizzie Gardner-McBride, who also played a huge part in her upbringing. In her early years, she was a member of her family church, New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, where she was baptized. She later joined Pearson Welcome Baptist Church under the teaching of Evangelist Agnes Swinton and the late Rev. Willie Prince. She served on the usher board and building fund committee as well as in other capacities within the church. Catherine was employed at Sumter Laundry & Cleaners for many years. She also worked as a home healthcare nurse and her last employment was as a domestic engineer for Larry and Faye Carraways, Dr. and Mrs. Harvin and Justice George and Dena James, prior to a decline in her health.

She leaves to cherish her memory: three daughters, Gladys Murray of Roslindale, Massachusetts, Henryetta Peterson of Alamogordo, New Mexico, and Cynthia (Norris) Wilson of Sumter; four sons, Sylvester M. (Louise) White III of Sumter, John (Evelyn) Vaughn of Baltimore, Maryland, Clarence (Michelle) Vaughn of Sumter and John A. (Francina) White of Jacksonville, Florida; two sisters, Lula (Junior) Wiggins of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and Mary Ellen (Chester) Sanders of Millville, New Jersey; a brother, Leroy McBride of Camden, New Jersey; 26 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; 20 great-great-grandchildren; as well as a host of relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her common-law husband, Sylvester White Jr.; a daughter, Alice Louise Young; her sisters, Emily McBride, Mary Elizabeth Rose and Lillian Benton; her brothers, Pete McBride Sr., Freddie Baldwin and Harry Benton; and her grandchildren, Pamela Denise Peterson, Toniette Nicole Carter, Rodeshia Green, Izakiel Peterson, MyAsia McBride and Rakeem McDonald.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday at Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church with Marion A. Newton, senior pastor, Ricky S. Simmons officiating, the Rev. Jeffrey Wilson, eulogist, assisted by Minister Kenneth Baker, Sylvester White, Ron McBride, Evangelist Janie Burgess and Sylvia Richardson.

The body will be placed in the church from 2 p.m. until the hour of service.

Interment will follow at Bradford Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 6 p.m. today at the Chapel of Sumter Funeral Service.
