A 25-year-old man has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death after a man on a bicycle was struck and killed Sunday in South Sumter.

Steve Allen Sumter, 51, of 309 Manning Ave., was riding a bike near South Harvin and East Bee streets when he was struck by a white 2004 Oldsmobile Alero that left the scene, according to a news release from Sumter Police Department. Sumter was transported to Palmetto Health Tuomey, where he was pronounced dead, the release said.

Later, at Penn Street and Manning Avenue, police reportedly found a vehicle which matched the description of the car which struck Sumter, but the driver was not with the vehicle.

A suspect, Diontae Lyquel Walters, of 767 Brand St., was located hours later at a residence on Laurel Street and taken into custody without incident, according to the department.
