HONOLULU — A’ja Wilson matched her career high with 26 points to help No. 2 South Carolina beat Cal State Bakersfield 90-71 on Saturday in the Rainbow Wahine Classic.
Wilson was 10 of 14 from the field and made 6 of 9 free throws. She also had eight rebounds, four assists and four blocks.
Bianca Cuevas added a season-high 20 points and had six assists, and Tiffany Mitchell finished with 13 points for the Gamecocks (6-0). They shot 55 percent from the field.
Batabe Zempare led the Roadrunners (1-4) with 19 points and eight rebounds. Alyssa Shnnon added 11 points and five assists, and Erika Williams had 10 points and four assists.
Cal State Bakersfield was 8 of 18 on 3-pointers and 13 of 15 from the line.
South Carolina led 45-37 at the half.
The Roadrunners trailed 27-14 after the first quarter, but got twice got within four points in the third quarter on a runner by Alyssa Shannon at the 8:12 mark and again on a floater by Williams with 6:35 left in the period.
Shay Colley scored on three straight South Carolina possessions near the end of the third to stretch the lead back to 59-50.
Cal State Bakersfield cut it to 66-61 on Dajy Vine’s basket off an assist from Shannon, but South Carolina scored on seven of its next nine possessions to make it 77-63.
The Gamecocks closed out the game on a 10-2 run.

HARTFORD, Conn. — Breanna Stewart had 25 points and 10 rebounds to lead top-ranked UConn to its 40th consecutive win, 88-46 over Nebraska on Saturday.
Stewart hit her first nine shots and finished 10 of 11 from the floor, with three 3-pointers.
Katie Lou Samuelson had 14 points. Fellow freshman Napheesa Collier added 10 points, making all five of her shots for the three-time defending national champion Huskies (3-0).

NEW YORK — Octavius Ellis had back trouble but played through the pain and didn’t seem to have any problem holding the MVP award for the Barclays Center Classic over his head.
The 6-foot-10 senior scored nine points and grabbed seven rebounds as No. 24 Cincinnati beat George Washington 61-56 on Saturday in the title game.
Troy Caupain’s 3-point play with 1:38 to play gave Cincinnati (7-0) the lead for good. After a missed 3 by the Colonials, Ellis scored on a tip-in to make it 57-54. Patricio Garino scored on a drive for George Washington with 29 seconds left.
The Colonials (6-1) let the Bearcats pass the ball around and they finally fouled when Ellis touched the ball with 14 seconds to play. He made both for a 59-56 lead. Two free throws by Caupain with 6.1 seconds left capped the scoring.
Jones still in lead at Australian Open
SYDNEY — Matt Jones shot a 3-under 68 to hold a 3-stroke advantage over a surging Jordan Spieth after the third round of the Australian Open on Saturday.
Defending champion Spieth holed out with his shot from the fairway on the par-4 17th for an eagle, then had a tap-in birdie on 18 for a 67.
Australian Rhein Gibson was in third after a 68, five behind Jones.
Fury ends Klitschko’s heavyweight reign
DUESSELDORF, Germany — Tyson Fury defeated Wladimir Klitschko by unanimous decision Saturday to end the Ukrainian’s 91/2-year reign as heavyweight champion.
Cesar Ramos and Raul Caiz Sr. scored it 115-112, while Ramon Cerdan had it 116-111 in favor of the undefeated Briton (25-0, 18 KO).
Fury took Klitschko’s WBA, IBF, and WBO heavyweight belts, as well as the minor IBO title, and attention turned immediately to a potential rematch.
