Food drive donations will help our needy neighbors

Posted

On behalf of the employees of the Sumter Post Office, please allow me to express my appreciation to our customers for their participation in last Saturday's 23rd annual "Stamp Out Hunger" letter carriers food drive.

This event is the world's largest one-day food drive. It allows every resident in Sumter County and across the nation to donate food that ultimately stays within the community to help our needy neighbors. In South Carolina, where many struggle with poverty, 23 percent of our children live below the poverty line.

During this time of year, when donations made during the holidays are running low and children who were fed in school lunch programs will soon be out of school, your donations will be quickly put to good use.

We collected 21,600 pounds of food this year, which was 7,600 pounds more than last year. United Ministries in Sumter received all donations.

We are very proud to serve a community that takes care of its own.
