Stamp Out Hunger: Leave food donations at mailbox on May 11

Posted

You can help do something about hunger in our country, and you don't have to go any further than your mailbox.

Saturday, May 11, is the 32nd anniversary of the National Association of Letter Carriers Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive, and residents are asked to help by leaving non-perishable food donations in a bag by your mailbox. Your letter carrier will do the rest. Donations go directly to local food pantries to provide food to those in need.

The drive has collected more than 1.9 billion pounds of food over its 30-year history according to a release from the U.S. Postal Service. This time of year is particularly crucial for food banks. When entering summer and children home from school, pantries become depleted and are in even a greater need for donations. More than 44 million Americans are unsure of where their next meal will come from, according to the release, and nearly 5.5 million seniors over age 60 are food insecure.

If you are able, do your part and leave more than your mail this Saturday.
